Cómo utilizar las preposiciones en inglés

Las preposiciones causan muchos problemas para los estudiantes de inglés. Pienso que es porque el uso de las preposiciones varía mucho de idioma a idioma y es natural querer utilizar las mismas preposiciones en inglés que en tu idioma nativo - ¡pero esto no siempre funciona! Una característica de las preposiciones que es bastante fácil una vez la aprendes es cómo utilizar las preposiciones de tiempo. Empleamos ‘in’ ‘on’ ‘at’ y ‘no preposición’ para expresiones de tiempo.

Cuándo utilizar ‘at’:

En general, si el tiempo es un momento concreto, utilizamos ‘at’. Por lo que lo empleamos con tiempos como ‘6 o’clock’ o ‘midnight’:

• I went to bed at eleven last night
• We arranged to meet at half past three
• The train leaves at 7:28

También empleamos ‘at night’:

• I don’t like walking alone at night

Otra expresión con ‘at’ es ‘at the weekend’ (también se puede decir ‘on the weekend’):

• What are you doing at the weekend?

Por último, utilizamos ‘at’ + período de vacaciones (por ejemplo, 'Christmas', 'Thanksgiving' or 'New Year') Recuerda, ‘at Christmas’ significa el período completo de vacaciones (normalmente unos pocos días), no sólo el día de Navidad:

• I love spending time with my family at Christmas
• She went on holiday to Spain at Easter
• They stayed at home at New Year

Cuándo utilizar ‘on’:

Empleamos ‘on’ con cualquier día, incluyendo fechas. Por ejemplo, podemos decir ‘on Tuesday’ o ‘on my birthday’ o ‘on the 2nd of July’ o ‘on Christmas Day’:

• I met him on Wednesday
• She called us on New Year’s Day
• The party is on the 13th of February

También utilizamos ‘on’ si estamos hablando de una etapa del día, como la mañana o la tarde. Por ejemplo, decimos ‘on Saturday morning’ o ‘on Thursday night’:

• We met on Friday night
• The meeting is at eight o’clock on Monday morning
• Are you busy on Thursday afternoon?

Por último, también podemos decir ‘on the weekend’, que es lo mismo que ‘at the weekend’:

• We went to a really good party on the weekend

Cuándo utilizar ‘in’:

Normalmente empleamos ‘in’ para períodos más largos de tiempo. Primero, utilizamos ‘in’ con los años (in 2006, in 1979):

• I first came to London in 2004
• She was born in 1982
• Shakespeare was born in 1564

Segundo, utilizamos ‘in’ con las décadas (in the 1960s, in the seventies):

• My grandparents met in the 1930s
• The Beatles were popular in the sixties
• She was born in the 90s

Tercero, empleamos ‘in’ con los siglos y los milenios:

• In the 19th century, women couldn’t vote
• The Roman Empire conquered Britain in the first century
• Leonardo da Vinci was born in the 1400s

Cuarto, utilizamos ‘in’ con las estaciones:

• I love eating outside in the summer
• We visited Venice in the winter
• She came to London in the autumn (or ‘fall’)
• You should visit Kyoto in the spring

Por último, aunque no es un período largo de tiempo, también utilizamos ‘in’ con la mayoría de las etapas del día cuando se expresan en solitario (in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening). ‘Night’ es una excepción, decimos ‘at night’:

• I always drink coffee in the morning
• We met in the afternoon and had a cup of coffee together
• She gets home late in the evening

Cuándo no se utiliza preposición:

Cuando empleamos ‘last’ ‘next’, ‘every’, ‘this’ ‘all’ con una expresión de tiempo, no necesitamos preposición (tampoco necesitamos ‘the’):

• I saw John last week
• I go swimming every Tuesday
• Let’s meet next month
• I’ve seen her this morning
• We danced all night

No necesitamos preposición cuando utilizamos 'today', 'yesterday' o 'tomorrow':

• I'll see you tomorrow
• He called me yesterday
• Have you seen Lucy today?

Normalmente no utilizamos ‘at’ cuando hablamos sobre tiempos utilizando ‘about’:

• I’ll see you at about five o’clock

• I’ll see you about five o’clock

Entrevista de trabajo – Encontrando la respuesta correcta

Hace poco publicábamos una entrada con consejos en inglés para hacer preguntas inteligentes y dar buena imagen en tu entrevista de trabajo.

A continuación se presenta la traducción al español de ese post para que te ayude a comprender el artículo completamente y aprovecharlo al máximo.

Prepararse para una entrevista de trabajo. Con el número de parados en caída libre, ahora es el momento de mejorar tus habilidades para realizar entrevistas.



Cuando todo lo demás es igual, el trabajo lo obtendrá la persona que más lo desee. No tiene sentido aparecer en una entrevista sin preparación ni práctica. Las primeras impresiones importan: te tienes que vestir de una forma acorde con el puesto para el que te entrevistan. La regla general es: lleva un traje. Si es posible de alguna forma compra una camisa y una corbata. Lleva un traje oscuro con camisa blanca y una corbata que pegue. Si no puedes permitir comprártelo, ¡entonces que te lo presten!

Investiga la compañía: es importante conocer tanto como puedas sobre la compañía pero también sobre sus competidores. No confíes sólo en google. Sal y habla con la gente, haz preguntas, lee algún artículo disponible y sé capaz de comentar sobre esta información y tener tu propia opinión.

Haz preguntas inteligentes: mucha gente no está preparada y hacen preguntas como: ¿Cuántas vacaciones hay? O ¿Pagan la baja por enfermedad? En las primeras etapas de la entrevista, éstas no son las preguntas adecuadas a hacer. Esta información se te facilitará en la etapa de la oferta. Las preguntas que realizas sirven para mostrar tu conocimiento e interés. Al final de la entrevista deberías siempre expresarlo comentando con el entrevistador que estás deseando incorporarte al puesto de trabajo.

Si es posible, haz una prueba y ve al lugar en el que la entrevista de trabajo tendrá lugar y calcula el tiempo del trayecto. Si no estás con cinco minutos de antelación para tu entrevista, entonces llegas tarde.

Entrevista de trabajo - Finding the right answer

Cuando realizas una entrevista de trabajo es muy importante saber tanto qué preguntar como qué responder a las preguntas que te hagan. Investiga sobre la empresa que te va a entrevistar y aprende sus valores y cultura.

When all else is equal, the person who wants the job most will get it. There’s no point in turning up for interview without preparation and practice. First impressions do matter: you have to dress in a manner that suits the role you’re being interviewed for. The rule of thumb is: wear a suit. If at all possible buy a new shirt and tie.Wear a dark suit with a white shirt and a matching tie. If you can’t afford to buy, then borrow!

Research the company: it’s important to know as much as you can about the company but also about their competitors. Don’t just rely on Google. Go out and speak to people, ask questions, read any articles available and be able to comment on this information and have your own opinions.

Ask intelligent questions: many people are unprepared for this and ask questions such as: ‘What are the holidays?’ and ‘Do you pay sick pay?’ At the first stages of interview, these are not the appropriate questions to be asking. This information will be given to you at offer stage. The questions you ask serve to show your knowledge and interest. At the end of the interview you should always express this by telling the interviewer that you are eager to take the position.

If possible, do a trial run to the place where the interview will take place and time the journey. If you’re not five minutes early for your interview, you are late.
